Imperial War Museum Manchester

IWM North is housed in a striking, aluminium clad building – the first in the UK to be designed by internationally acclaimed architect Daniel Libeskind.

Libeskind created the building to enhance the museum’s subject matter - the sharp angles, sloping floors, leaning walls and imposing exterior are deliberately in place to unsettle and disorientate you, intensifying the collections and stories within.

Our striking Main Exhibition Space features a timeline of the conflicts that Britain and the Commonwealth have been involved in since the First World War. Discover personal stories of those whose lives have been changed by war, and explore themes common to all conflict in six mini-exhibitions within the space – from the role of women to science and technology.

Using surround sound, projected digital moving images and photographs, the Big Picture Show brings to life people’s experiences of war. Recently upgraded to the latest HD technology, the Big Picture Show immerses you in the heart of the action, creating a complete sensory experience which is totally involving and often very moving.

Seven shows are projected daily on the 27-foot-high walls of our Main Exhibition Space, each focusing on a different aspect of war.

Big Picture Show Timetable:

11am: The War at Home, Noon: Children at War, 1pm: Weapons in War, 2pm: The War at Home, 3pm: Weapons in War, 4pm: Children at War

Please be aware that when the Big Picture Show is on, the exhibition space will go dark and there will be loud noises and flashing images which some visitors may find unsettling.
