Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey, Cornwall

Seat of the Tremayne family for over 400 years, is one of the most mysterious estates in England. Between 1770 and 1914, four generations created an almost self-sufficient community. Gradual decline set in following the departure of the last resident squire in the 1920's.

Over two decades have now passed since opening to the public. Heligan offers over 200 acres for exploration. Discover our Victorian Productive Gardens, romantic Pleasure Grounds, lush sub-tropical Jungle, pioneering Wildlife Project & beyond...

New for 2014, after months of planning and lots of hard work, we are extremely pleased to announce that our new Jungle rope bridge is now open!

And at Easter, we continue to turn back the clock a hundred years as we welcome the return of emus to the Heligan Estate.

In 2008 The Lost Gardens of Heligan was granted National Collection Holder status by Plant Heritage for its historic and unique collection: Camellias and Rhododendrons Introduced to Heligan pre-1920. There are more than 70 veteran camellias and 350 ancient rhododendrons included in the collection, which are found throughout Heligan. The earliest plantings date from around 1850 and Squire John Hearle Tremayne made the earliest camellia plantings.

The earliest rhododendrons in the collection were raised from seed collected by the great Plant Hunter, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker in India, during his expedition of 1847-51.
