Killerton House, near Exeter

Would you give away your family home for your political beliefs? Sir Richard Acland did just this with his estate, at 2,590 hectares (6,400 acres) one of the largest the Trust has acquired (includes 20 farms and 200-plus cottages). Killerton House, built in 1778–9, brings to life generations of the Aclands, one of Devon's oldest families.

Explore this year’s fashion exhibition ‘The Nature of Fashion' with intricately decorated pieces stitched, dyed and printed from natural fibres to catwalk fashion. See the beautiful garden full of colour all year round - with rhododendrons, magnolias and rare trees surrounded by rolling Devon countryside.

Our garden displays an ever changing colour palette through the seasons. Sit and relax among sweeping lawns, naturalised bulbs and rare trees. Crunch your way up the gravel path listening to bees buzzing in the herbaceous borders. Escape into the tranquility of the chapel grounds or discover a hidden rock garden.

The house is very family friendly, with mouse trails, quizzes, books to pick up and read; and even replica costumes to try one. Walk around this relaxed home while the whole family enjoy their visit. Our discovery centre for families is open during the school holidays, 11am-4pm. Inside you can stop and enjoy arts and crafts, pick up a trail or two for the woods and learn more about the Victorians and life at Killerton during the war.

Relax and refresh at the Stables Cafe and the Killerton Kitchen restaurant. Produce and plants available to buy in the shop.

This property is owned by the National Trust. Members pay coach only.
