Buckfast Abbey & Salcombe

Nestled in the shadow of Dartmoor, in a beautiful wooded valley beside the river Dart, Buckfast Abbey offers visitors a tranquil refuge from the hectic pace of everyday life. The Abbey is a working monastery where a community of Benedictine monks live self-sufficiently, welcoming visitors from all around the world. At the heart of the site is the Abbey Church, a spiritual haven for the many thousands of visitors who come each year. There is an overwhelming sense of peace as soon as you enter the grounds with the church surrounded by gardens which in the summer come alive with colour.

Within the Abbey precinct, visitors can browse in the Bookshop or visit the Monastic Shop which has an extraordinary array of products made by nuns and monks across Europe. There is also a gift shop and information point by the Westgate entrance. In the Grange Restaurant, you can relax and enjoy tea and homemade cakes or choose from a range of hot meals and light snacks which are changed daily. Escape for a while at Buckfast – worlds away from the busy rush of the everyday and just a few minutes from the A38.

Salcombe - Devon's sailing capital

A haven for yachties and those who prefer to keep their deck shoes firmly on dry land, Salcombe is popular with all ages and delivers beautiful golden sand beaches, sparkling blue seas, wonderful walks in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and great food.Take a walk along the South West Coast Path and discover hidden coves revealed at low tide or enjoy some bucket and spade action on popular North Sands beach where there are rock pools to explore.

From the town you’ll look out and see the beautiful East Portlemouth beach seemingly unreachable across the river but luckily a number of ferries are available to take you over the water to this long sandy beach. The Railway and River Boat Company also offer boat trips to and from the town and wildlife watching trips, such as TV star Monty Halls’ Great Escapes, can be booked if you want to get closer to nature.

This vibrant town boasts a great range of shops, where you can pick up the sailing look even if you have no intention of setting foot on the water. If you do want to get your feet wet there are various places to have a go at a range of water sports. After all that exercise you’ll need to refuel; step no further than Fore Street for a range of great restaurants and food outlets, where you can enjoy the best in local produce. Salcombe boasts a thriving harbour and freshly caught fish and crab features heavily on menus across the town.
